Information about the National Warning System and key messages about what to do before, during and after an emergency

National Warning System (NWS)

All media organisations on the Ministry’s media release distribution list have been added to the NWS. The NWS issues tsunami warnings, advisories of possible tsunami threat, earthquake advisories, and volcanic activity advisories. Media receive this information at the same time as local and central government agencies, emergency services, utility companies, welfare organisations and all the other organisations that might be involved in a response.

National tsunami warnings and advisories

Only messages issued by the Ministry are official warnings and advisories for New Zealand. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) issues bulletins for the Pacific advising countries there has been an earthquake and to activate their own systems for assessing local threat and, if need be, issuing local warnings. PTWC states: “Only national and local government agencies have the authority to make decisions regarding the official state of alert in their area and any actions to be taken in response.”

Key messages about what to do before, during and after an emergency

Key messages on www.getthru.govt.nz about New Zealand hazards can be used accurately anywhere in the country. Please feel free to copy them and publish or broadcast them as required. They have been agreed by civil defence agencies, scientists, emergency services and others as New Zealand’s consistent messages. Local detail can be added in addition to this information.
