Cyclone Gita - Local states of emergency

Wednesday 21 Feb - last updated 4:41 pm

States of local emergency have been terminated in Westland, Buller, Grey and Selwyn Districts, and in Christchurch City.

Local states of emergency remain in place for the Nelson-Tasman region and New Plymouth district.

Remember to avoid non-essential travel during severe weather, and never drive through floodwaters.

After a storm:

  • Listen to your local radio stations as emergency management officials will be broadcasting the most appropriate advice for your community and situation.

  • Stay away from damaged areas. Your presence might hamper rescue and other emergency operations, and put you at further risk from hazards such as flooding, contaminated water, crumbled roads, landslides and mudflows.

  • If you have been evacuated, only return home when local officials tell you that it is safe.

  • Check on your neighbours, particularly if they are vulnerable..

  • Wear sturdy shoes or boots, long sleeves, and gloves when handling or walking on or near debris.

  • Throw away food and water that has been contaminated by floodwater.

  • If your property is damaged, take notes and photographs for insurance purposes. If you rent your property, contact your landlord and your contents insurance company as soon as possible.
